Nuclear Waste to Double, Government Does Nothing with $30 Billion

Yesterday on “Morning Edition,” NPR reported on a recent ruling from the DC Circuit regarding the storage of nuclear waste.  The report contained two facts that jumped out at me.  First, the amount of nuclear waste is expected to double in forty years, and, second, the federal government has accumulated $30 billion from utilities to pay for a permanent nuclear waste dump and hasn’t done anything with it.

Read the NPR story here.

The case is Natl Assoc., Reg. Util Commissioners v. Department of Energy (DC Cir. 2012).

I wonder if the next Republican in the White House will re-start Yucca Mountain.  Then, the next Democrat could shut it down again!
