Proposed Legislation Would Stop Aquifer Injection Operations in South Georgia

Georgia State Senator William Ligon, among others, is sponsoring a bill to place a moratorium on aquifer injection operations in several South Georgia counties.

Last May, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources approved a measure to allow an Aquifer Storage and Recovery operation in South Georgia.  For more information on ASRs, see my post here.

Injection wells pose a lot of risks to both human health and the environment.  The storage of water in this manner also might lead to unnecessary fights over water rights, so I’m relieved to see this legislation, which the Georgia Conservancy supports (this link also contains a nice summary of other environmental legislation the General Assembly is considering this term).
